American Teen

In class we watched a documentary of four teenagers going through high school in Indiana.  At first I thought it was going to be dumb, not really realistic I guess.  However as the movie went on I could totally relate McFarland to the high school.  There is definetly the social group aspect.  There were also a lot of awkward moments (that were hilarious), and I think that made the movie relatable too, because high school can be very awkward at times.  All of the drama I thought was a little over the top, but high school drama can be over the top too.  I liked how each high schooler had a specific problem that they were going through, and all of them were different.   The popular girl went through the pressure of getting into Notre Dame like the rest of her family, and that can be so stressful.  The band geek was going through, I would say a self-esteem problem, especially after he figured out his girlfriend was cheating on him.  There was a girl that wasn't really in one of the social groups and she was going through self-iussues and also trying to figure out how she was going to be successful in the future.  The basketball star was going through the pressures of getting recruited, which I could relate to a ton.  His story kind of hit home to me, because there is so much pressure in sports alone, and then when you have to preform knowing that someone is watching...whewwphh it's a lot to go through.  So far I like the documentary.

  1. I totally agree with ya Jace. It does compare to the high school experience for the most part. Every person was going through a typical high school issue that a lot of us have encountered in some way at some point. It was a very relatable documentary for a lot of people I think. But I do agree that the drama was a little over the top. Sure we've seen vandalism, but toilet-papering a house and writing what was written on someone's window? C'mon. But I guess it happens, just not so much in McFarland haha. I also liked how you related the basketball player to your situation. Good post! (:

  2. I'm really glad you posted about this Jacie! At first I thought the documentary was going to be really dumb too, but as we got watching it, I started to really enjoy it!

I agree with Shelby about the vandalism part, that was a bit over the top, but I guess it does happen in some places.

I never really thought about all of the pressure on the athletes to preform well in front of recruiters, I just figured that they were going to be good no matter what. I'm glad that you pointed that out because I never realized that it can effect you guys that much.

I can definitely relate to the one girl who was so worried about getting into Notre Dame. I want to go to the UW-Madison more that anything in the world, so I completely understand the pressure that she's under.

  3. Hey good post jacie, I also liked the documentary because of the humor and how it related to a lot of kids in our class. Im sure a lot of kids in our class can relate to the girl trying to get into college. Even though I dont think we have anyone going to Notre Dame it is still very competitive and puts a lot of pressure on teens.

  4. Jacie, I really liked this post. That movie did at times remind me a lot of McFarland High. Cliques and friend groups are definitely present here, as they are probably all over the country in high schools. But the drama for me too was a little over the top. That Megan girl was just terrible, who does that stuff?! But overall I really liked the documentary. & I'm very glad that you got recruited to play soccccca at Marquette :)
